Duck Nest

A Duck Nest is a player-built structure that Ducks use to produce items. Nests are essential for obtaining Duck Eggs, Feathers, and Raw Quackmium from Ducks.

Construction

A valid Duck Nest consists of:

  • A center block (either a Hay Bale or Nest Lining)
  • A 3x3 flat area of solid blocks surrounding and including the center
  • Air space above all 9 blocks in the nest area
  • Ring blocks must not be nest center materials (to prevent overlapping nests)

Basic Layout

[R] [R] [R]
[R] [C] [R]
[R] [R] [R]

Where:

  • C = Center block (Hay Bale or Nest Lining)
  • R = Ring blocks (any solid blocks, or specific materials for higher quality)

Quality Levels

Nest quality determines what items Ducks can produce. Higher quality nests require more valuable materials but yield better drops.

Quality Center Block Ring Blocks Notes
1 Hay Bale Any solid blocks Basic nest, only produces Duck Egg
2 Nest Lining Any solid blocks Can produce Feathers
3 Nest Lining Mud Bricks Can produce Raw Quackmium
4 Nest Lining Calcite Higher Raw Quackmium chance
5 Nest Lining Block of Quackmium Best possible drops

All 8 ring blocks must match the required material for quality levels 3-5. Mixing materials results in quality level 2.

Example Layouts

Quality Level 3 (Mud Bricks):

[M] [M] [M]
[M] [N] [M]
[M] [M] [M]

Where M = Mud Bricks, N = Nest Lining

Quality Level 5 (Block of Quackmium):

[Q] [Q] [Q]
[Q] [N] [Q]
[Q] [Q] [Q]

Where Q = Block of Quackmium, N = Nest Lining

Drops

When a Duck completes nesting, it produces an item based on the effective level, which is the minimum of the Duck’s level and the nest’s quality level. A level 3 Duck using a quality 5 nest still produces level 3 drops.

Effective Level Possible Drops
1 Duck Egg (100%)
2 Duck Egg (60%), Feather (40%)
3 Duck Egg (60%), Raw Quackmium (40%)
4 Raw Quackmium (70%), Duck Egg (30%)
5 Raw Quackmium (80%), 2x Raw Quackmium (20%)

Duck Behavior

Nest Selection

Ducks search for nests within a 16-block horizontal radius and 8-block vertical range. They prefer nests with quality equal to or greater than their level. If no suitable nest is found, Ducks will reluctantly use a lower-quality nest as a fallback.

Nesting Process

The nesting behavior follows a sequence of states:

  1. Searching: The Duck locates a valid, unclaimed nest
  2. Moving: The Duck walks toward the nest (up to 30 seconds before timeout)
  3. Settling: The Duck positions itself precisely on the center block (up to 3 seconds)
  4. Disappointed (optional): If the nest quality is below the Duck’s level, the Duck displays disappointment for 10 seconds with smoke particles and head shaking, and gains 1 stress
  5. Nesting: The Duck sits on the nest for 5 seconds before producing an item
  6. Leaving: The Duck walks at least 7 blocks away from the nest

Claiming

Only one Duck can use a nest at a time. When a Duck selects a nest, it claims that position until the nesting process completes. Other Ducks will not attempt to use a claimed nest.

Cooldown

After completing the nesting process, Ducks enter a 10-second cooldown before they can nest again.

Effects on Ducks

Nesting affects Duck emotional states:

Stat Effect
XP +1 per successful nesting
Stress Decreases based on Duck level
Loneliness Increases based on Duck level

Lower-level Ducks gain more stress from nesting, while higher-level Ducks become lonelier.

If a Duck uses a nest below its level, it gains an additional 1 stress from disappointment.

Stress by Duck Level

Duck Level Stress Gained
1 2
2 2
3 1
4 1
5 1

Loneliness by Duck Level

Duck Level Loneliness Gained
1 1
2 1
3 2
4 2
5 3

Optimization Tips

  • Build nests that match or exceed your Ducks’ levels to avoid the disappointment stress penalty
  • Space nests at least 3 blocks apart (corner to corner) to prevent overlap invalidation
  • Place nests within 16 blocks of where Ducks typically roam
  • Consider building multiple nests in an area to reduce Duck travel time
  • Higher-level Ducks become lonelier after nesting and may need social interaction

Notes

  • Nests do not generate naturally; they must be built by the player
  • Breaking a nest while a Duck is using it will interrupt the nesting process
  • Nests can be built at any Y level as long as the construction requirements are met
  • Corner blocks cannot be Hay Bales or Nest Lining, as this would create ambiguous overlapping nest configurations
