Duck
The Duck is a passive mob. Ducks have unique emotional states including hunger, stress, and loneliness, and can produce valuable items when properly cared for.
Spawning
Ducks can be spawned in the following ways:
- Throwing a Duck Egg (1/3 chance to spawn 1 duck, 1/48 chance to spawn 4 ducks)
- Using a Duck Spawn Egg
- Fishing at a Duck Shrine (with a 5-minute cooldown per player)
Ducks do not despawn naturally, similar to other passive mobs.
Appearance
Each duck is given a random name upon spawning. This name is displayed above the duck and cannot be changed.
Behavior
Movement
Ducks use amphibious pathfinding, allowing them to walk on land and swim through water. They have a movement speed of 0.25 and a follow range of 32 blocks. Ducks are completely immune to fire damage and have a safe fall distance of 5 blocks.
Tempting
Ducks are tempted to follow players holding food that they can eat. (See Feeding, below.) The one exception to this is beetroot or beetroot seeds, which ducks do not find tempting, although they are able to eat them.
Additionally, ducks are tempted by bread, even though feeding them bread will result in Bread Sickness.
Emotional States
Ducks have three emotional meters that affect their behavior:
| Stat | Maximum | Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Hunger | 10 | Increases over time as the duck moves; high hunger triggers the Hungry state |
| Stress | 10 | Increases when panicking or using low-quality nests; high stress triggers the Stressed state |
| Loneliness | 10 | Increases after nesting; high loneliness triggers the Lonely state |
Hungry ducks will remain frozen in place, paralyzed by hunger. Stressed ducks will seek water to relax. Lonely ducks will seek out other ducks to chat with.
Leveling
Ducks have an experience and level system. They gain 1 XP each time they complete nesting. The level thresholds are:
| Level | Total XP Required |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
| 2 | 10 |
| 3 | 25 |
| 4 | 55 |
| 5 | 115 |
A duck’s level affects the quality of items it can produce when nesting.
Feeding
Ducks can be fed various foods to reduce their hunger. Different foods have different nutritional values:
| Food | Hunger Reduced |
|---|---|
| Seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, beetroot, torchflower, pitcher pod) | 1 |
| Seagrass | 1 |
| Kelp, Dried Kelp | 2 |
| Beetroot | 2 |
| Sweet Berries | 3 |
| Melon Slice | 4 |
| Glistering Melon Slice | 7 |
Warning: Feeding a duck bread will inflict the Bread Sickness effect for 20 seconds, which can be fatal.
Interactions
Players can interact with ducks using various items:
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Brush | Reduces stress by 1 (uses 16 durability) |
| Shears | Increases stress by 1 (uses 1 durability) |
| Feather | Reduces loneliness by 1 (consumes item) |
| Stick | Increases loneliness by 1 (consumes item) |
| Rotten Flesh | Increases hunger by 1 (consumes item) |
These interactions are intended for early-stage duck raising; at later stages, ducks should have their stress and loneliness needs taken care of by nearby ponds and other ducks.
Interacting with a duck without holding a special item opens the Duck GUI, which displays the duck’s name, level, XP progress, and current emotional stats.
Nesting
Ducks will periodically seek out Duck Nests to produce items. Ducks search for nests within a 16-block horizontal radius and prefer nests with quality matching or exceeding their level. When using a nest below their level, ducks display disappointment and gain additional stress.
The items produced depend on both the duck’s level and the nest’s quality level. Higher-quality nests built with better materials allow ducks to produce Raw Quackmium instead of just Duck Eggs.
After nesting, ducks gain XP (contributing to level progression), stress, and loneliness. They then enter a 10-second cooldown before nesting again.
See Duck Nest for detailed information on nest construction, quality levels, and drops.
Combat
Attempting to harm a duck will cause divine retribution:
- When a duck is hurt, the attacker is immediately struck by lightning
- If a player hurts a duck, they receive a warning message
- If a duck is killed by a player, the player receives the Wrath of the Duck Gods effect for 15 seconds
- If a duck is killed by another entity, that entity receives Wrath of the Duck Gods for 7.5 seconds

Trivia
- The mod name “Anatidaephobia” refers to the irrational fear that somewhere, a duck is watching you.
- Ducks cannot be renamed using a name tag; attempting to do so displays a message explaining this.
- Ducks cannot be leashed.
- Despite being fire immune, ducks can still receive Bread Sickness damage from eating bread.
